Our Mission

Our order began in 1937 when the Vicar Apostolic of Southern Nigeria, Archbishop Charles Heerey, was moved to compassion and realized that he needed many hands to relieve the suffering of the people of the region. Almost all were mired in severe poverty; ignorance, malnutrition, poor medical care and abuse of women and children were widespread. Establishing the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, he charged the nuns to bring the love and compassion of Christ to the people and raise them to the dignity accorded to children of God.

Our Story

In 1967, we Sisters began our first mission outside Nigeria, in Kenema, Sierra Leone. In the decades since we have expanded to Kenya, Europe and the United States.

Members of our order have become a familiar sight in Freeport, in our distinctive blue habits. Now we are embarking on a new ministry to serve local women facing unprepared motherhood and empower them to shape a positive future.
